500 turn out for rally to protest against Latvian as sole language of instruction in all schools

RIGA, Oct 23 (LETA) - Some 500 people turned out for a rally today to protest against the Education and Science Ministry's proposal to switch to Latvian as the sole language of instruction in all high schools of Latvia, LETA obsereved.

Although today is the first day of a week-long school holiday, most of the protesters are adults and senior residents.

Also participating in the protest are European Parliament members Tatjana Zdanoka and Andrejs Mamikins (Harmony), as well as leaders of Latvia's pro-Russia organizations.

Many protesters are holding different placards, which say that the reform proposed by Education and Science Minister Karlis Sadurskis (Unity) is lunacy and it will end Sadurskis' career. One elderly lady is holding a placard that reads: "I Want To Learn in Russian".

There are also people from Rezekne and Daugavpils participating in the rally.

The protesters are chanting the slogan used extensively thirteen years ago, "Hands Off Russian Schools!"

The speakers at the rally emphasize that they are part of Latvia, they pay taxes, and they want the state to ensure education in Russian. They also say that a signature drive will be launched on the Manabalss.lv portal to halt the reform.
