Emergency situation on border with Belarus costs about EUR 4 million

RIGA, Oct 3 (LETA) - The emergency situation on the border with Belarus has cost additional EUR 4 million to the interior services and the Defense Ministry, according to the government decisions since last autumn.

The money has been allocated from the contingency funds. The Interior Ministry has prepared a new draft decisions on allocating another EUR 638,254. This sum is to cover expenses for August - overtime payment and bonus payments to employees, costs for inventory and fuel, costs for food and daily expenses for asylum seekers.

Taking into account the increased pressure of illegal immigration, the Latvian government last year declared a state of emergency in Ludza, Kraslava and Augsdaugava counties, as well as in Daugavpils. The state of emergency has been extended repeatedly.
