The place of regions in the European Union architecture in view of the Conference on the Future of Europe

    June 25, 2021

The following is a press release from the European Committee of the Regions:

On behalf of the Presidents of the European Committee of the Regions, the Government of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and the Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies, we invite you to attend the event "The place of regions in the European Union architecture in the context of the Conference on the Future of Europe".

The current pandemic has shown the crucial role that regional and local authorities have in delivering healthcare and managing social and economic recovery. Regions also bring proven added value to the European Union, in particular in the green and digital transitions, and in strenghtening trust with citizens. The Conference on the Future of Europe provides an opportunity to reflect on the functioning of democracy including on the place of regions and to take better into account the territorial dimension in the governance of the European Union.

This event will feature two panel debates with Presidents of regions and of regional parliaments from various EU member states. These will be followed by the adoption and official signing of a Declaration as the starting point of a political alliance that aims at enhancing the regions' political impact at the European level on matters with direct relevance to the work of local and regional authorities. The final text of the Declaration will be available on the event's day.
